Shift in MiFID II timeline

Anne PlestedKay Swinburne MEP delivered an excellent update on the progress of the MiFID review at a recent conference on the Challenges of MiFID II.  She revealed that the final legislative proposal – focusing on transparency, proportional oversight of the market and investor protection – would now be completed “after the summer” and by September. Publication of the draft legislation had previously been expected by July.

Dr Swinburne reported that the pre-legislative process was now getting underway for the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers to produce their reports and that agreement on MiFID II legislation was likely “within a year” which, by my calculation, means by September 2012.

    It seems that delays in introducing reforms are not the sole preserve of European regulators, as the US derivatives regulator the Commodity and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announces its own delays:
